The Re-Building Tour evolved as a useful tool for orientation of volunteers, corporatations, visiting scholars, college/graduate students, planners and funders. In post disaster New Orleans, it was designed to help frame the conversation about the disaster, progress, community perspective, re-building support, and re-inventing strategy. The Re-Building Tour is intended to display the devastation of the disaster and the contrasts of neighborhoods in recovery. The tour also works to put the impact of the devastation into social, historical and political context so that more than emotional overwhelm can be achieved.
Finally and most importantly, the tour debriefing which immediately follows the tour is used to assist visitors in focusing their attention on the parts of the disaster and the recovery that they can impact and the parts that are the responsibility of New Orleans residents.
The tour will visit Central City, the Treme,7th Ward, Upper and Lower 9th Ward, Gentilly, Pontchartrain Park, New Orleans East and Lakeview neighborhoods.
We will disembark from the bus in two locations determined closer to the actual date of the tour assure the best options. We ask you to be considerate respectful and honorable in your visits to the neighborhoods. Pictures can be taken when residents don’t protest.
Lunch will follow immediately after at the Ashe Cultural Center for a debriefing.
